Understanding Your Tracking

What Happens
at Each Stage.

Every Hanes Distribution order travels through five key stages from factory to your project site. Here's what happens at each one and what to expect.

01
🏭
Manufacturing
Your goods are produced at a vetted, certified facility. Pre-shipment quality inspection is completed. All compliance documentation — test reports, certificates, installation guides — is prepared. You'll receive order confirmation and production timeline.
2–6 weeks production time
02
Port of Origin
Goods are containerised, loaded, and shipped from the port of origin — typically Shenzhen (Yantian) or Shanghai. Bill of Lading is issued, customs export clearance confirmed, and your shipment is formally handed to the carrier. You receive vessel and container details.
3–7 days port handling
03
🚢
Ocean Freight
Your container is aboard a major carrier vessel — Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, COSCO, or similar — making its way to New Zealand. This is the longest stage. You can track vessel position via carrier websites using your Bill of Lading number. ETA is updated in real time.
22–28 days transit (Asia to Lyttelton)
04
🏗️
Port of Destination & Devanning
Upon arrival at Lyttelton, the vessel berths and containers are unloaded. NZ customs clearance and biosecurity inspection is completed. Once cleared, the container is transported to our Hornby facility and devanned (unpacked). Stock is allocated to your project.
3–7 days port, customs & devanning
05
📦
Warehouse & Site Delivery
Your materials are staged, checked, and allocated in our Hornby warehouse. Staged dispatch is coordinated to match your project programme. Our logistics team contacts your site team to confirm delivery windows. Direct-to-site dispatch nationwide.
1–5 days from warehouse to site

Stage-by-Stage Guide

Your Supply Chain
Explained in Full.

01
🏭
Manufacturing & Production
2–6 Weeks
Your goods are manufactured at a vetted, certified facility — independently audited for quality systems, engineering capability, and product compliance. All Hanes Distribution manufacturing partners undergo rigorous pre-approval before a single order is placed.

During production, our Hong Kong coordination team monitors progress, flags any lead time changes, and ensures pre-shipment inspection is completed before goods leave the factory.
  • Factory produces your order to NZ specifications
  • Pre-shipment quality inspection completed
  • Compliance documentation pack prepared (CodeMark, BRANZ, test reports)
  • Order confirmation and production timeline issued to client
  • Packing list verified — quantities, specifications, condition confirmed
  • Export customs documentation prepared
02
Port of Origin
3–7 Days
Goods are containerised, loaded aboard vessel, and shipped from the port of origin. Hanes Distribution uses the ports of Shenzhen (Yantian Terminal) and Shanghai depending on carrier routing. Our Hong Kong office coordinates directly with the freight forwarder and carrier to confirm loading and sailing schedule.

Once the vessel departs, the Bill of Lading (B/L) is issued — this is your primary shipment document. You receive vessel details, container number, and B/L number.
  • Container stuffed and sealed at factory or CFS
  • Export customs clearance lodged and confirmed
  • Container loaded aboard vessel at port terminal
  • Bill of Lading issued by carrier — your key tracking document
  • Original B/L and compliance documents dispatched
  • Vessel departure confirmed — ETA issued to Hanes team
03
🚢
Ocean Freight — In Transit
22–28 Days
The longest stage of the journey. Your container is aboard a major carrier vessel — typically Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, or COSCO — making its way from Asia to Lyttelton. Transit times are 22–28 days from Shanghai/Shenzhen depending on carrier, routing, and any port calls.

You can track your vessel in real time via the carrier's website using your B/L number. ETA updates are provided by our logistics team if significant changes occur. Current advisory: 10–12 week pre-order windows recommended given ongoing Red Sea freight market volatility.
  • Container aboard vessel — tracked via carrier AIS data
  • Live vessel position available via carrier tracking portal
  • ETA monitored by Hanes logistics team daily
  • NZ customs pre-arrival clearance lodged
  • MPI biosecurity pre-notification submitted
  • Hanes warehouse notified of inbound ETA for planning
04
🏗️
Port of Destination & Devanning
3–7 Days
Upon arrival at Port of Lyttelton, the vessel berths and containers are crane-lifted off. NZ Customs and Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) biosecurity inspection is completed. Once cleared, the container is transported by truck to our Hornby facility where it is devanned (unpacked), goods are checked against the packing list, and stock is allocated to your project bay.

If any issues are identified during devanning — damage, shortages, or discrepancies — our team contacts you immediately and initiates the freight insurance claim process.
  • Vessel arrives and berths at Lyttelton Terminal
  • Container discharged from vessel
  • NZ Customs clearance completed
  • MPI biosecurity inspection passed
  • Container transported to Hornby facility by road
  • Devanning completed — goods checked against packing list
  • Stock allocated to your project bay in warehouse
05
📦
Warehouse & Site Delivery
1–5 Days
The final stage — your materials leave our Hornby warehouse and go direct to your project site. Dispatch is staged to match your build programme. Our logistics coordinator contacts your site team to confirm the delivery window, ensure appropriate offloading access, and confirm any special delivery requirements.

We coordinate nationwide delivery from Hornby — South Island and North Island. Staged dispatch allows materials to arrive when you need them, not all at once. Delivery confirmation and documentation are provided upon completion.
  • Dispatch order raised — stock allocated and picked
  • Delivery window confirmed with your site team
  • Dispatch documentation prepared — delivery docket, compliance pack
  • Materials loaded and dispatched from Hornby warehouse
  • Direct-to-site delivery completed — nationwide
  • Delivery confirmation issued — your project is supplied

Common Questions

Tracking
FAQs.

Everything you need to know about tracking your Hanes Distribution shipment.

Where do I find my reference number?
Your reference number is provided on your order confirmation email from Hanes Distribution — it follows the format HD-YYYY-XXXXX (e.g. HD-2026-00481). You may also use your Bill of Lading number (issued by the carrier once goods are loaded) or your purchase order number if provided to our team. If you can't locate your reference number, contact us at Enquire@hanesdistribution.co.nz.
How long does ocean freight take?
Transit time from major Chinese ports (Shenzhen, Shanghai) to Lyttelton is typically 22–28 days, depending on the carrier, vessel schedule, and routing. Some services call at intermediate ports (e.g. Singapore, Fremantle) which can add 2–5 days. We always provide an estimated arrival date when your goods depart and update you if ETA changes significantly.
What happens during customs clearance?
Upon arrival at Lyttelton, your container goes through NZ Customs (NZCS) clearance and Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) biosecurity inspection. Customs checks the commercial invoice, packing list, and import entry. MPI inspects for biosecurity compliance. This typically takes 3–5 working days but can be faster for well-documented shipments. Hanes Distribution handles all import customs documentation as part of our supply service.
Can I track my shipment directly with the carrier?
Yes — once your goods are aboard a vessel, you can track live vessel position using your Bill of Lading (B/L) number directly on the carrier's website. For Maersk: maersk.com/tracking. For MSC: msc.com/track. For CMA CGM: cma-cgm.com. For COSCO: cosco.com. Enter your B/L number (e.g. MAEU-741892630) to see current vessel position and ETA.
What if my goods are delayed?
Delays can occur due to port congestion, vessel schedule changes, weather events, customs holds, or carrier disruptions. If your shipment is delayed, our logistics team will contact you as soon as we become aware of the delay and provide a revised ETA. For time-critical projects, speak to our team at the time of ordering — we can explore express freight or stock held in our Hornby warehouse that may be available for faster dispatch.
How do I arrange site delivery?
Once your goods arrive at our Hornby facility and are devanned, our logistics coordinator will contact you to arrange delivery. We'll confirm the delivery window, site access requirements (crane, forklift, delivery vehicle type), and any staged delivery schedule. We deliver nationwide — South Island via our own fleet and North Island via freight partner network. Please ensure your site team is available to receive and sign for goods on the agreed delivery date.
What documents will I receive with my delivery?
Your delivery will include a delivery docket, packing list, and your product compliance documentation pack — which may include CodeMark certificates, BRANZ appraisals, test reports to AS/NZS standards, engineer certificates, and installation guides depending on the product. These documents are essential for your building consent file and are accepted by NZ consent authorities. Keep them on file for the life of the building.
Can I change my delivery address or staging schedule?
Yes — contact our logistics team at Enquire@hanesdistribution.co.nz as early as possible if your delivery address or staging requirements change. Changes are easiest to accommodate while goods are still in transit. Once goods have arrived at Hornby, changes to staging schedules may still be possible depending on warehouse capacity. We aim to be flexible — contact us and we'll work with you.
